SBBE students’ industrial classes in petroleum company
The 3rd intake SBBE students had the opportunity to visit the Orlen company, the biggest petroleum industry in Poland. The students’ tour was guided by the Nijhuis company team that specialize in wastewater treatment and energy recovery. Orlen’s plant manages three distinct wastewater streams: glycol, biodiesel, and crude oil refined water. Each requires specialized processes to handle different pollutants. The students learned step-by-step about flocculation dedicated to removal of suspended solids, oils, and fats; dissolved air flotation employing microbubbles to float up the contaminants following their removal by mechanical scrapers; MBBR reactor for biological degradation of pollutants. The visit was an enriching experience to the students regarding sustainability, since the plant operates under a “reduce, reuse, recover” framework, significantly reducing environmental pollution and enhancing wastewater treatment quality.
