Meeitng with Valmet Startup Engineer Krzysztof Tekień
As part of Erasmus Mundus program in Sustainable Biomass and Bioproducts Engineering, the 3rd intake students had the chance to travel to the northern part of Poland, to the city of Świecie, for a field trip to Mondi Company. The lectures, led by renowned Valmet Startup Engineer Krzysztof Tekien (SBBE Invited Scholar), gave the students a detailed understanding of the paper production process, which they later witnessed firsthand at Mondi. Starting with wood sourced from responsibly managed forests, the production process involves chipping and pulping the wood through chemical methods. The pulp is then refined and screened before being spread onto conveyor belts to be pressed, dried, and formed into sheets, which are finally rolled and cut.
During the visit, students had opportunity to saw Mondi’s commitment to sustainability in action, with a strong focus on energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction. Their adherence to high environmental standards, such as FSC® and PEFC™ certifications, was evident throughout the production process. In addition to the educational aspect, the 1.5 days journey itself was enjoyable and full of memorable moments, which made this experience not only educational but also rewarding on a personal level.
